Denim love

The last few weeks I have been experimenting with dyeing.
I dyed these merino tops in the microwave.
Was I happy with the result?

                                                                         Sure was!
                                                    I've spun 100grams into a chunky

And here it is Denim Love.

And the other 100grams is now being spun into thin and thick and plyed with a cotton strand.

And for more wonderful inspiration  check out Fiber Arts Friday.

crochet goodness

Hi everyone.
Hoping everyone had a joyful christmas. We certainly did, spending it with just the 5 of us at home. We had wanted to be on holidays this christmas but Steve has had to work through it. The important thing was we were altogether. There are people, some very close to my heart , that christmas is a painful time rather than a time of celebration as they don't have their most loved ones with them this year. I feel very fortunate to have my husband and 3 kids to celebrate with.

It may be christmas but the crocheting hasn't stopped. While the kids have been playing with their new toys I have been hooking away.
And I just love my new vest/jacket. The inspiration came from the beautiful Sandrine  and the pattern can be found here, and the wool came from a friend (thankyou Ann).
I altered the pattern slighty for a snug fit. The back I crocheted to 13 inches instead of 16 inches. Also the wool I was given was an 8 ply, so I used 2 strands together.

This was a super quick project. I'm already dreaming of another one....

Fabric Printing Part 3 - the saga ends

If you have been following the fabric printing saga,  Part 1 and Part 2 didn't go too well.
Part 3 is the happy ending I am glad to report.
We did some more printing on the tea towels . This time I told the kids to just "go for it", which they enjoyed much better. And then I chopped it all up into triangles.......

Please ignore very crappy wall and ceiling

....and circles.

We shall do a bit of hand sewing this week.

I'm happy and the kids are happy.
And we did manage to salvage 2 tea towels for teachers' gifts too.

Spinning, spinning, spinning

Started with these dyed merino tops........

.......and Ta Da- Golden Glow.
207grams , haven't done the maths yet for the length, and I'm guessing about a 8 ply.

Also having fun experimenting with some leftover tops.
Now this one I spun thick and thin on purpose - almost back to my beginnings. But I have been told you have to learn the rules before you can break them!
The single spin was then plyed with cotton.

And this is my latest mantra.
It was also a part of a Kris Kringle present I made recently for a xmas party I couldn't get to.
Sob, sob, sob.(car still out of action).

So I took the advice and had a great day of dyeing merino tops.
Can't wait to show you.

And I having been popping into FIBRE ARTS FRIDAYWISDOM BEGINS IN WONDER for a month now and seeing all the beautiful fibre arts around the world, but this is my first linky there. So go on and check it out too.

Why just at christmas?

Do you find yourself baking/cooking certain foods just at christmas time,
but actually they would be good all year round?
This is another favourite christmas time treat.

Apricot Balls

Ingredients: 700g dried apricots
1 tin condensed milk
juice of 1 lemon
5 tablespoons dessicated coconut
150g plain biscuits  (I used gluten free "freelicious tea biscuits" )

1. In a food processor finely chop apricots and set aside.
2. Add condensed milk, lemon juice, coconut, and biscuits and combine well in processor.
3.Add condensed milk mixture to apricots and stir through.
4. Using a teaspoon, spoon mixture and roll into a ball, and roll in extra coconut to coat each ball.
5. Refrigerate

Sunday Snippets

A scenic drive through the Gorge to the burbs
From a moving car and a special effect I didn't have time to change -oops
and a very very very windy road.

 Finished a miny crochet bunting.

Fellow crocheters might be amused at this as much as me.
My husband will often bring me home a special drink on a friday.
Of late we have been trying out all the new ciders.
Look at the crochet label!!

And the kids have been getting ready to spread the christmas cheer.

For more Sunday Snippets pop over to Tinniegirl.

I have a new friend

His name is Angus.
He's rather large, dark and, some say, handsome.
He visits most days.
Yesterday Steve got wise to his visits.

And then his mate got wise to it too!

Have a great weekend everyone.
ps I am without email service and car (not sure what is more isolating! Let's hope the internet service doesn't die too).

My creative space - Ta Da!

I did it. From natural undyed silk and merino to this.
See the spinning journey here -

And then there was disaster.
This should be a post on it's own, titled When fabric printing goes terribly wrong -Part 2.

I had this vision- to make hand printed tea towels with the kids for special gifts...
I used texcraft dual purpose fabric paint on linen , I ironed and ironed and ironed to heat set them.
And then they went in the wash. That's when the disaster struck.
They are going to get scrapped....and I now have to break it to the kids.
There be will a part 3 . And it is going to be a happy ending!

Check out oucreativespaces for more inspiration

MPAY- ho ho ho

Thanks Vic for hosting a christmas party over at MPAY this week.
We have put the christmas tree up this weekend. And what I really loved about it this year was that I didn't have to do it. My 9 year old took charge and he did it very well, all with very minimal fights with his siblings.
It's all about the kids for us, right down to the decorations.
Nothing styled here.

 Some stunning egg carton bells....
and who said you can't do anything with finger knitting?!

Do you find when you unpack the decorations something needs fixing/mending/chucking?
Not too bad this year. This tree still needs the bells sewn back on. But if you are a follower of this blog you know how I feel about mending.
One year I unpacked mouldy salt dough creations - not so good.

And there is always a bit of kid's christmas craft going on.
Thought we'd try fabric painting . Thought it would be fun. Thought the kids would be happy.
Wrong Wrong Wrong.
If only I could show you the photo of my angelic 6 year old daughter giving me the bird . And that was basically the mood of the day. It was a real test of my sanity. And I'm not sure of the results....
And not to stop there. I put one in the washing machine and obviously didn't iron it for long enough as some of the paint washed out.. Can anyone tell me - can I put them in the dryer to heat set?

So here's(raising eggnog glass) to blogging and christmas!!!
